SUMMER 2024 MAKE ART SERIES | MAKE ART PACKETS, STATIONS + WORKSHOPS
An invitation to take in the exhibition and to deepen the experience of the artist’s work through responsive making:
This summer’s Make Art Series workshops, drop-in Make Stations, and Make Art packets have been developed by CVAG’s summer student interns, who have been inspired by the work presented in the exhibition: Diane Landry: Matière dans le Temps | Matter in Time from June 15 – September 14. Landry is known for her kinetic sculptural works and performances that utilize light, shadow, sound and movement. Much of her work incorporates the use of upcycled materials.
Workshop activities will be facilitated by the student interns. Drop-in sessions are self-guided using materials created by the students; participants are welcome to ask students for assistance. Make Art packets with materials and creative prompts are also available off-site at various locations throughout the community.
STUDENT INTERNS – Naia Lisch | Rhea Whitehead | Griffin Halpin | Rachael Henshaw
Make Art activities are suitable for all ages + abilities, except where specified. Children and those who require support to participate must be accompanied by a capable + responsible person.
No cost — donations are gratefully accepted and contribute to ongoing community outreach.

KITES + PINWHEELS
Kites – Friday | June 28 + August 9 | 1:00 – 4:00pm | all ages + abilities
Pinwheels – Friday | July 19 + August 16 | 1:00 – 4:00pm | all ages + abilities
Influenced by Diane’s kinetic work, these projects move with the wind or by the makers’ intentional interactions. The kites and pinwheels being created during the workshops are simple to make and work in the lightest of breezes. Participants can create kites all summer using found materials at home or while on holidays.
BOOKBINDING
Wednesday + Thursday | July 3 + 4 | 1:00 – 4:00pm | ages 15+
Based on Diane’s use of upcycling, CVAG’s summer interns have planned papermaking and bookbinding workshops.
In the bookbinding workshop, participants will be learning to make small hand-built books using discarded and handmade paper. This type of book is relatively simple to construct but requires the ability to do precise hand-folding.
This workshop is by registration (now closed). The workshop is offered to people ages 15 and up.
HANDMADE PAPER
Wednesday | July 10 | 1:00 – 4:00pm | ages 10+
In the papermaking workshop, participants will learn how to create handmade paper from recycled paper using household appliances and tools. The gallery will supply the materials for making the paper.
Be sure to:
- Bring four medium-sized old towels to dry the paper.
- Wear work/making clothing, this is a messy and wet process.
This workshop is by registration (now closed). The workshop is offered to people ages 10 and up, all minors must be accompanied by a supervisor.
CAST SHADOWS + FOUND MATERIAL SCULPTURES
Cast Shadows – Friday | July 26 | 1:00 – 4:00pm | all ages + abilities
Found Material Sculptures – Friday | August 2 | 1:00 – 4:00pm | all ages + abilities
Participants will create fascinating creations inspired by the artist’s practice of building with discarded items and playing with light and shadows. Following the concept of the artist’s larger sculptural works, participants will use boxes, miscellaneous items, and recycled objects to craft a sculptural installation within a larger cube. By building an opaque image onto a transparent material, then placing it in front of a light source, interesting and surprising shadows can be created.
