Market Day 2024 | Making Anthotypes + Printing with Plants

July 20 2024 / 1:00pm - 4:00pm

During Market Day 2024, CVAG is offering some easy, eco-friendly printmaking opportunities!

1.  MAKE ART WORKSHOP – MAKING ANTHOTYPES | 1:00 – 4:00PM

On Saturday afternoon, join us at CVAG for a special Make Art workshop with Gabe Moore:

This workshop is an exploration into anthotypes: a camera-less method of creating images. Derived from the Greek word “anthos”, meaning flower, this workshop guides participants through the art of contact printing using the photosensitive properties of plants. Objects or a negative are used to block UV rays from reaching certain areas of a piece of paper coated with a light-sensitive solution. The light causes a chemical reaction in the coating, inciting an image to form.

Be sure to:

  • Bring plant cuttings or other things to make images with
  • Wear work/making clothing, this is a messy and wet process. We will be using a turmeric-based solution that can highly stain.

This workshop is by registration. The workshop is offered to people ages 10 and up. All minors must be accompanied by a supervisor.

To register, email register@comoxvalleyartgallery.com with your name, age, and the workshop you are registering for (Making Anthotypes). If you are a caregiver, include the number of participants and ages.

Participation is free — donations are gratefully accepted and contribute to ongoing community outreach.

FUN FACT: the anthotype process was invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842. World Anthotype Day is August 3, 2024. Learn more at www.alternativephotography.com.

2.  DROP-IN MAKE STATION – PRINTING WITH PLANTS | 1:00 – 4:00PM

The community is invited to create print transfers using plants at CVAG’s Make Station during Market Day 2024:

In addition to the facilitated Make Art workshop with guest artist Gabe Moore, there will be a drop-in Make Station at CVAG that is open to all ages and abilities (no registration required).

Visitors can create prints using plants for direct printing (object to paper) and/or rubbings. Various paper materials will be provided to print onto, so you can create custom art on kites or even field journals!
