As part of the residency organized by Emily Thiessen, Wachiay Studio’s Community Art Coordinator, six community-based artists from around B.C. spent a week immersed in the screen print medium.

An exhibition of their work is currently presented in CVAG’s Community Gallery. This space is open to the public Tuesdays – Saturdays, 10:00AM – 5:00PM. (NOTE: CVAG hours are different — Wednesdays – Saturdays, 10:00AM – 5:00PM)

An informational video accompanies the installation and shows the artists conducting creative research and development at Wachiay Studio.

During the Wachiay Residency, six community-based artists from around BC spent a week immersed in the screen print medium at Wachiay Studio in Courtenay. Screen printing uses a fine mesh screen to transfer layers of ink onto a surface. Each colour is printed in a separate layer and lined up exactly with the layers underneath. To foster collaboration, we hosted two artists in the studio at a time: Luke Ramsey from the Sunshine Coast and Rachelle Antoine from K’omoks First Nation were the first artists in the studio. Amanda Hugon and Facundo Gastiazoro are two members of Raven Tacuara mural collective in northwest BC. Shawna Kiesman and Danika Saunders are longtime friends who met at Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art. The residencies gave us the space to explore and strengthen our art practices together.

The Comox Valley Art Gallery collaborates with community partners to support professional development + creative research through  presentation and artist residency opportunities. During the Wachiay residencies the artists were hosted at CVAG Next Door Artist Residence and Emily Theissen was supported in launching her first public exhibition presented in the Gallery’s Community Gallery space.
