MESH: ART FROM THE WACHIAY RESIDENCY

During the Wachiay Residency, artists from across Canada spend ten days immersed in the screen print medium at Wachiay Studio in Courtenay. Wachiay Print Studio started this program out of a desire to create connections and amplify the voices of community-based artists.

Screenprinting is a tactile printmaking method where ink is pressed through a fine woven mesh onto paper, fabric, and other raw materials in distinct layers. That fine mesh screen is also where everything intersects. When artists from different places and backgrounds work a shared studio, their unique processes spill into one another. Working shoulder to shoulder, individual practices collide, and lasting connections are made in the thick of it.

This year’s artists were:

  • Lauren Correia from the Comox Valley and Dominique Desbiens from Montréal;
  • Miles Tsang from Toronto and Stewart Hughes from Squamish;
  • Caresse Nadeau from the Comox Valley and Dan Brown Hozjan from Dawson City; and
  • Jeanette Laberge from K’ómoks First Nation and Jenny Ritter from Mayne Island;
