STREAM INCUABTOR | SUMMER 2023
Our Summer STREAM Incubator is back!
After completing their LEGO build of the newly-renovated gallery in 2022, the summer 2023 STREAM participants are now building a LEGO model of the Vancouver Island Regional Library in Courtenay.
They are also continuing their work with EV3 and VEX V5 robotics. Inspired by the REPOSITORIES SERIES by Reva Stone, which is currently presented at CVAG as part of the exhibition Together Apart | Under One Roof, the STREAM students have initiated Imagining + Exploring Robot Behaviours. As part of the Explorative Make Art Series this summer, CVAG and the STREAM students invite the community to join them in experiments using old and new technologies to create robots that produce drawings, make sounds, have sensor responses and new behaviours.
STREAM: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ROBOTICS, ELECTRONICS, ARTS + MATHMATICS
STREAM is an inquiry-based, hands-on learning program for youth, ages 10 – 15, facilitated at CVAG by educator Stew Savard.
CVAG is committed to supporting youth in navigating their learning pathways at the intersection of art and technology — areas that have been historically patriarchal. STREAM Incubators emphasize access, diverse perspectives and ways of learning, rooted in relationship building and reciprocity.
The initial series of STREAM incubators began in 2021, inspired by the work of Deb Dumka and Claire Sanford. Their exhibition, Our Young Girls, was an interactive installation exploring gender + digital empowerment + access + technology + safe spaces + art.
In 2022, the community youth group explored stop-motion animation; collaborative learning of EV3 and VEX V5 robotics; and the design and construction of a LEGO model of the art gallery architecture, plaza, and the 2022 renovations. They have experienced how it is to be thinking, making and imagining, within an immersive space of art + design, and in relation with cultural workers circulating and presenting at CVAG. Diverse identities have come together to express something about place, identity and belonging. Together we create a safe space for learning.
