A Centre for Contemporary Art

The Comox Valley Art Gallery is dedicated to presenting and fostering contemporary art by professional artists from the region, the country and beyond. Through our exhibitions, publications, creative residencies and education programs, we link the Comox Valley to the broader world of contemporary art practice. We actively engage the public, draw visitors, and enliven the community through public events, performances, community collaborations, all-ages make art projects, youth training and mentorship programs, and a gift shop that sells the work of hundreds of local artists. CVAG is an independent public gallery run by a non-profit society.

The Comox Valley Art Gallery is grateful to operate on the Unceded Traditional Territory of the K’ómoks Nation.

CVAG spaces are accessible, and programs are barrier-free (no cost). Donations are appreciated.

FIELD RECORDINGS OF ICEBERGS MELTING | MICHAEL CAMPBELL

Artist Statement:

Michael Campbell is interested in obsolete technologies, remote landscapes, purposeless inventions, suburban boredom, bad sci-fi films, utopic schemes, adolescent fantasy sketchbooks and handmade tools.

Field Recordings of Icebergs Melting is a body of work that has been touring across Canada and France since 2008. This ever-expanding series incorporates a range of materials and objects, including; driftwood, copper, zinc, cloth covered wiring, stressed plywood, cogs, levers, sphagnum moss, canvas, vacuum tubes, hemp line, rusted brake line, brass ornamentation, and thousands of tiny nails.

Recent exhibitions include The Trianon Gallery, Lethbridge Agnes Etherington Art Centre Kingston, EXPO 2005 Aichi Japan, Plug-In Institute for Contemporary Art (Winnipeg), The Southern Alberta Art Gallery (Lethbridge), Red District Gallery (Marseilles France), the 2002 and 2005 Alberta Biennial (Edmonton, Calgary and Banff) and YYZ (Toronto), and Truck Gallery (Calgary).

Michael Campbell is a Full Professor at the University of Lethbridge, Faculty of Fine Arts and currently lives on Hornby Island BC.

The Comox Valley Art Gallery is committed to creating spaces where everyone can participate.

CVAG spaces are accessible.

Programs are barrier-free (no cost). DONATIONS are appreciated and contribute to ongoing community interactive programming.

CVAG spaces are accessible. Efforts are made to make presented programming contents available to all by using approachable audio and visual technologies to aid in experience and way-finding. Staff are available to answer any questions and to provide orientation to the presentation and gallery spaces.

PUBLIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS: We ask that visitors choose not to visit if they are experiencing symptoms of colds and flus. Hand sanitation dispensers are available at CVAG. Wearing a mask is at the discretion of the visitor.
