MAKE ART WITH TRICIA WASNEY
Artist Tricia Wasney will lead participants in a workshop to create memorial medals to honour an important person, animal or event. This is a contemporary take on the Victorian practice of mourning jewellery where items of the deceased, usually hair, were fashioned into wearable jewellery.
In her exhibition The things that hold us (opening on Saturday, September 19 at 1:00pm), Wasney has included twelve medals made to honour loved ones who have died.
Participants will make their Memorial Medals in the morning and can wear them to the exhibition opening celebration that will follow the workshop!
NOTE: Coffee/tea and light nibbles will be available after the workshop / before the opening starts.
WORKSHOP REGISTRATION
This free workshop will be limited to 20 participants.

Because spaces are limited, we ask that you commit to attending the workshop when you register.
There is no fee to participate and supplies and tools for making are supplied, BUT…
Participants need to bring a personal item to include in their pin. Keep in mind these are small, delicate objects — so choose personal items accordingly!
Guidance will be provided; however, this art making activity is best suited for individuals aged 10 and older.

ABOUT TRICIA WASNEY
“My work centres on the spaces we inhabit: our relationships with the land, with each other, and with the histories that brought us to where we find ourselves. I was raised on a small farm in Manitoba by two hard-working parents who were products of the Great Depression so I was instilled with a ‘mend and make do’ ethos. This, and a deep attachment to the land, carries over into my work as an artist. Using pre-owned, waste, organic or found objects is poignant as these materials come with their own embedded stories. Much of my work, for example, includes cast-off jewellery which was once worn on people’s bodies, an intimate experience to ponder. I try to both tease out the inherent (but ultimately mysterious) histories but also to combine materials in unexpected ways to create new narratives. I’m compelled by the unreachable and unknowable and by the illusions we create to attempt to understand.”
