Art Gallery Assistant (5 Positions)

The Comox Valley Art Gallery is seeking candidates for Art Gallery Assistant. The hourly wage is $12, the work week is 30-35 hours, for 8 or 12 weeks (depending on funding program) starting as soon as possible.

The Art Gallery Assistant will report to the Curator/Program Director and will provide support in all areas of gallery operations, including installing artwork, developing promotional material, documentation, gallery maintenance, office administration, reception and public relations.

The ideal candidate will be studying art education, cultural management, arts administration, communications or a related field of study. They must have a strong commitment to art, to the arts community, and to customer service. The candidate must be familiar with basic computer and word processing skills (MS office), and some familiarity with Creative Suite is an asset.

Other assets include familiarity with art exhibitions, documentation, and the production of promotional material.

The ideal candidate will have an enthusiastic attitude about the contribution of the arts to the community, will have excellent organizational skills, and excellent oral and written community skills. A criminal record check is required to work with children.

Note: these positions are funded by Canadian Heritage through Young Canada Works – ‘Summer Work Experience Program’, and by the Government of Canada’s ‘Canada Summer Jobs’ Program. To be eligible to apply, candidates must fit the criteria of these funders, including: be legally entitled to work in Canada, be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or person granted refugee status in Canada; be between 16 and 30 years of age; willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; not have another full-time job (over 30 hours/week); have been a full-time student in the semester preceding the assignment and intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the assignment.

A range of responsibilities are available from being a receptionist, to assisting with exhibition installation to hosting at special events.
